Why the Fuck Not Sunday – 11/22
TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS – “ORPHANS”
From one of the most influential no-wave bands to come out of the late 70’s/early 80’s NYC art scene, “Orphan” is two minutes of thumping drums, shrieking guitars, and volatile vocals. At one time having both Lydia Lunch and James Chance (who later left due to artisitic differences), the band was known for intense 10 minute sets and for inspiring every alt band since their inception.
ERIC’S TRIP – “STOVE”
From their debut Sup Pop record Love Tara comes “Stove” by Eric’s Trip. Along with The Beat Happening, Eric’s Trip was helping in pioneering the lo-fi scene back in the early 90’s. When I first became a DJ at KTXT I remember finding this in the stacks and falling in love with this almost forgotten band.
KING KHAN AND THE BBQ SHOW – “WHY DON’T YOU LIE”
From their 2006 In the Red release What’s for Dinner?, King Khan and BBQ Show definitely bring the garage rock to a whole other level, incorporating a bit of soul, blues, and those lovable Nugget collections. When I first listened to this record I remember replaying this song over and over again; I might have wore out my needle with this song.
THE DIAMOND CENTER – “DOS FRIDAS”
I miss the Diamond Center. And this video will make you miss them as well.
GRASS WIDOW – “LULU’S LIPS”
This year I have been falling in love with a lot of female lead bands: Best Coast, Pens, Bridez, Brilliant Colors, Dum Dum Girls (just to name a few). But I think the one band that I have really been digging lately is San Fransisco’s Grass Widow. With a lo-fi-esque sound and vocal duties from all three members, GW creates melodic no-wave punk ala Raincoats/Vaselines/Velvet Underground.

THE PARIS SISTERS – “I LOVE HOW YOU LOVE ME”
I have a live version of this song being sung by a sick and a bit tipsy Jeff Mangum (from Neutral Milk Hotel). I love his version, but this original version by the Paris Sister really takes the cake. A Phil Spector song, one really gets his ‘wall of sound’ fully realized with this track.
Finally an interesting video of the future of music. At a dinner with friends this video was brought up. Literally reacting to the table, these pedal-like boxes can make everything from acid flavored disco to spaced out trance. I later found out that Bjork uses this instrument on tour (which I feel like would be a bitch to tour with, but I bet Bjork is too).

I want the future table so bad it hurts
Lydia Lunch is the greatest punk singer ever!
